All of Unity's diverse surface finishes serve not only as durable foundations but also as creative canvases that invite innovation and design excellence. Each material goes beyond its functional role to contribute to a visually striking and architecturally engaging environment. For example, the FDNY access walkway paths are clearly delineated with pigmented grey surfaces painted with bold yellow striping, ensuring limited foot traffic on the membrane itself, safety and high visibility for emergency responders while doubling as a clean design element that integrates seamlessly into the rooftop layout. The checkerboard terrazzo playground area, crafted from EPDM blended tiles, introduces a playful yet sophisticated pattern that sparks imagination and encourages interactive play. Adjacent to this, turf-top tiles define the recreational and sports zones, offering a natural feel underfoot while maintaining exceptional durability and shock absorption—ideal for active use on a rooftop application. These materials offer unlimited design possibilities, particularly when specified using Unity’s proprietary blending station, which enables the creation of custom surface colors with high Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) ratings to reflect natural sunlight. This not only keeps the play surfaces cooler but also supports thermal comfort for rooftop users. Additionally, the acoustically engineered coned rubber backing helps mitigate noise transmission to the classrooms below, maintaining a quieter learning environment.Further enhancing their appeal, Unity’s surfacing systems are composed of high recycled content materials, contributing points toward USGBC LEED certification and aligning with sustainable design goals. Whether used individually or in combination, these finishes transform rooftop spaces into multifunctional, aesthetically dynamic, and environmentally responsible play and recreation areas. With that, we invite you to take a careful look at our products on your next application.
