Location:Miami-Dade County, FL, USA
Year:2017
A joint project with The Trust for Public Land, TD Bank, Greenfields Outdoor Fitness, and Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces, the Olympic Park Fitness Zone® opened in November 2017. Having already seen success at several other similar projects, project planners knew they had a concept that worked. As with many parks, the amenities already available were primarily intended for children and athletic individuals. By creating a space for park users who might otherwise be bystanders - such as seniors and those with disabilities - planners ensured that the park was well-rounded and provided activities for the greatest number of users possible.
A thoughtfully-curated selection of exercise units, incorporating both stretching and strengthening exercises, was chosen for the space. Moreover, project planners selected units for those at every level of fitness, from entry level to advanced. Greenfields’ 3-Person Static Combo offers exercises such as dips, pull-ups, and sit-ups for advanced users; three other upper body units from Greenfields’ Signature Accessible™ line incorporate stations for those in wheelchairs. Another strength-building apparatus, the 2-Person Back & Arms Combo, rounds out the upper body offerings. Stretching activities are provided in the form of the 2-Person Cross Country Ski, 4-Person Lower Body Combo, and 4-Person Pendulum, Abs & Dips Station.
In total, the nine units at the Fitness Zone® allow for 25 people to exercise simultaneously, creating an environment that not only fosters active lifestyles, but also encourages socialization. Units such as the 4-Person Leg Press and 2-Person Cross Country Ski, which facilitate user interaction, especially promote this concept. A unique layout features a “flower” design in which the concrete surfacing forms a petal pattern, with one exercise unit on each “petal,” and a central area is populated with trees and ferns. Visible from the street, the fitness area has a wheelchair-friendly path connecting it to the sidewalk encircling the park. Other features of the fitness area include several benches, trash receptacles, and bike racks. Three signs in English, Spanish, and Creole list general guidelines for using the equipment.
The Fitness Zone carries the added distinction of being a green infrastructure project, specially designed to collect rainwater from the surrounding pavement and direct it into the ground, rather than allowing it to become runoff. Functional, eye-catching, and environmentally-friendly, the Olympic Park Fitness Zone® promises to be used and enjoyed by park goers for years to come.
